The GREAT Leeds Fungi Exhibition

glfe

2025

Hosted by Studio Greenly. Held at Headrow House in the city centre of Leeds. This exhibition was a celebration of all things within the world of fungi, and included 2D and 3D works, as well as a selection of performances.

As part of the event, I exhibited two pieces. One, a large scale, abstract canvas painting (shown right). The second, a collection of handmade microwave and raku fired mushrooms, which were featured on a display piece made by me and made from locally sourced wood and live moss (shown below).

“Fungi x Lichen” was inspired by my reading of “Entangled Life” by Merlin Sheldrake. In an excerpt that spoke about the 1869 paper by Swiss botanist Simon Schwendener on the “dual hypothesis of lichens”, Schwendener describes the fungal and algal partnership that makes up the visible body of lichen. This large scale canvas, painted using acrylics and texture medium, depicts this microscopic view and explores the interaction of colour between itself and its audience.

In my exploration into the world of clay, I created 20 individually handmade and fired ceramic mushrooms. Some of which were made using a black clay, glazed with a combination of glazes, and fired in my microwave kiln. The others were made using a terracotta clay, glazed with a raku glaze and fired using my microwave kiln and then placed into a reduction environment to bring out the metallic effects in the glaze. All pieces were finished with a copper wire detail to allow them the be fixed into the display piece.

The display piece was also created by me using wood found in my local park and sustainably sourced live mosses of various species. The aim of the construction was to create a plinth that gave height, depth, texture and a realistic natural setting for the ceramic mushrooms.

New ceramics.

All handmade. All individual. All fired in a microwave kiln.
